South African hip-hop group Die Antwoord turned down a tour offer from Lady Gaga.
The Zef group, whose name means “The Answer” in Afrikaans, Watkin Tudor “Ninja” Jones (tattooed pre-balls-drop-voiced tongue-twister) + Yolandi “Yo-Landi Vi$$er” Visser (voice of a horror movie baby + a blonde Lisbeth Salander ‘do), sat down with MTV Canada to spit some trufs:
Weird shit’s been happening, like fucking Lady Gaga asked us to tour with her and we’re like, ‘No, don’t worry about it.’ Cause we’re just in another zone, like, operate in another kind of dimension to everything. We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they’ve got, like, soul. It’s got a lot of layers, it’s powerful. It’s not like weak, superficial shit. You know?
I think they though we were just like a weird, strange act, then like ‘Let’s just let them have their fun for a while, and then when it comes to their second album we’ll have them play games.’ They were looking at Lady Gaga + The Black Eyed Peas and that type of shitty pop music, and were thinking we could, like, twist into that.
Fact. Lady Gaga’s music, catchy as it can be, is not revolutionary to me. I love some of her songs (“Just Dance,” “Paparazzi,” “Alejandro,” “The Edge of Glory,” “Yoü + I”), but most of the other tracks are dumpster.
